Do You Have to Dress Up for the Theatre? (Spoiler: Nope.)

Every season, we get some version of the same anxious question:

"Is there a dress code for community theatre? What should I wear?"

The short answer is: come as you are. The longer answer is a little more fun, and we think it'll make your night out even better.

If you're wondering whether you'll be underdressed, overdressed, or accidentally dressed like you're accepting a Tony Award… relax.

What do people actually wear to community theatre?

This is community theatre, not Broadway.

At any given community show, you’ll see a mix of outfit types, but mostly you’ll see:

  • Jeans and a nice top

  • Casual dresses

  • Khakis/slacks and a button-down

  • Business casual

  • Dressier outfits for opening night or special occasions

  • Outfits that match the theme of the show

Basically, a range of everyday clothing.

Can I Wear Jeans to the Theatre?

Don’t have a ton of fancy outfits in your closet? No problem!

No fashion police are standing with the ticket takers. Jeans and a T-shirt are just fine.

Bonus points if it’s a Theatre Huntsville shirt. Don’t have one? You can get one here.

We want you to come and enjoy the show in whatever outfit makes you comfortable (unless that outfit is your birthday suit, and then we’re gonna need you to layer it up).

We’re theatre kids; we love a good costume, and that extends to our audience.

Want to dress to match the show's theme? Do it!

Coming to a Jane Austen show? Then get your Regency finest on! Is Dracula the leading man? Grab those spooky earrings and black lipstick.

Be sure to take some photos when you’re at the theatre. We love to see them! And tag us so we can show them off!

Love to get fancy? Don’t let us stop you!

If you’re looking for an excuse to break out your finest dress or best suit, then the theatre is perfect.

Matinee performances are usually more casual, especially if people are coming from brunch, errands, or other daytime activities.

Evening shows are typically when people may dress up more, but casual/business casual is still perfectly appropriate.

To Your Own Comfort Be True

Theatre seats aren't your couch, so pick something you'll be comfortable sitting in for 2–3 hours.

Layers are your friend, and we always recommend bringing a sweater or jacket if you tend to get cold (you never really know what the temperature will be in the Playhouse).

Comfortable shoes are always a good idea.
