5 Reasons to See Georgiana & Kitty Even If You're Not an Austen Fan

Let's get one thing straight: you do not need to have read Pride and Prejudice to enjoy Georgiana & Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley.

(Don’t believe us? Read this.)

You don't need to know your Bennets from your Bingleys.

You don't need strong opinions about which Mr. Darcy is the best Mr. Darcy (but our Marketing Director Larkin does, and it’s Colin Firth BTW).

And you certainly don't need to have memorized the entire Regency-era social hierarchy.

If your knowledge of Jane Austen begins and ends with a vague recollection of a wet shirt and a man named Darcy, you're in good company.

This November, Theatre Huntsville is bringing Georgiana & Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley to the stage.

It's the third and final installment in Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon's Christmas at Pemberley series, and it's full of reasons to join us even if you've never cracked open an Austen novel.

Here are five of them.

1. It's About Friendship, Not Just Finding a Husband

Surprise! Not every story set in Regency England has to revolve around finding a husband before your next birthday.

At the heart of Georgiana & Kitty is the friendship between Georgiana Darcy and Kitty Bennet.

Georgiana is the younger sister of the famously reserved Mr. Darcy, while Kitty is one of the younger Bennet sisters who has spent much of her life in the shadow of her more outspoken family members.

Together, they're figuring out who they are, what they want, and how to build lives that feel like their own.

It's a story about friendship, growing up, and discovering that you don't have to follow someone else's script.

And really, who hasn't needed a friend to help them figure out what they're doing with their life?

2. Romance Is in the Air (With a Side of Family Interference)

Okay, we did say this wasn't just about finding a husband.

We didn't say there wouldn't be romance.

Georgiana has been corresponding with a gentleman named Henry Grey, and he's coming to Pemberley for Christmas. Naturally, this creates some excitement, and some opportunities for the family to have Opinions.

You know the type. The relatives who mean well but somehow make everything more complicated.

Whether you're a hopeless romantic, a skeptic who claims to hate romance but secretly loves it, or someone who just enjoys watching fictional people make questionable decisions, there's plenty here to enjoy.

Besides, romance is even more entertaining when someone else's family is meddling in it.

3. You Don't Need an Austen Degree to Follow the Story

Never read Pride and Prejudice? You're fine.

Forgot everything that happened in the first two Christmas at Pemberley plays? Also fine.

The series imagines what happens to Austen's characters after the events of her famous novel, but Georgiana & Kitty tells a new story centered on two young women finding their way.

Knowing the characters' history adds a little extra fun, but you don't need to study a family tree before taking your seat.

And if you'd like a quick refresher, we've already done the homework for you.

Check out our blog, Christmas at Pemberley Explained: What Happened in Miss Bennet & The Wickhams?, for a spoiler-filled recap of the first two plays.

You're welcome.

4. It's a Christmas Story Without the Usual Christmas Movie Formula

We love a good holiday movie. We also know that sometimes you want something a little different from the usual parade of small-town bakeries, surprise inheritances, and people who discover true love approximately 48 hours before Christmas.

Georgiana & Kitty brings holiday atmosphere together with romance, family dynamics, personal ambition, and the particular chaos of spending time with people who know far too much about your personal life.

It's festive without being predictable, and it's a chance to spend the season somewhere a little different: the grand estate of Pemberley.

No matching family pajamas required.

5. Live Theatre Is Just More Fun in Person

You can watch a movie at home in your pajamas. You can stream another holiday special while wrapping presents. You can even read Pride and Prejudice under a blanket with a cup of tea.

But live theatre? That's a different experience.

There's something special about watching local actors bring a story to life right in front of you. Every performance has its own energy, every laugh comes from a room full of real people, and you're part of a shared experience you can't quite replicate on a screen.

When you see a Theatre Huntsville production, you support local artists and the community theatre that brings stories to North Alabama audiences year-round.

Consider it your holiday outing with a little extra heart.

So, Are You Coming to Pemberley?

Whether you've read every Jane Austen novel, watched every adaptation, or couldn't pick Mr. Darcy out of a lineup, Georgiana & Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley has something for you.

Come for the romance. Stay for the friendship. Enjoy the family meddling. And leave the Austen homework at home.

Georgiana and Kitty are ready for their turn in the spotlight. We'd love for you to be there.
