About Leslie
Leslie Gates (she/her) has spent a lifetime bringing stories to life—from the moment she first stepped onstage at age six, theatre has been her passion, profession, and playground. With more than 50 years in the arts, Leslie is a powerhouse director, performer, and arts administrator known for creating theatrical experiences that are as inclusive as they are unforgettable.
An award-winning director, she’s helmed everything from the raucous comedy of Spamalot and The Pirates of Penzance to the heart of Big Fish, the grit of A Few Good Men, and the powerful truths of A Raisin in the Sun. She’s not just a leader behind the scenes—Leslie occasionally returns to the spotlight, most recently portraying Anne Hathaway in The Book of Will. Whether she’s managing a stage, crafting the perfect prop, or guiding a production to standing ovations, Leslie brings unmatched energy and heart to every role she plays.
Offstage, Leslie is a champion for community engagement and arts accessibility. She’s helped shape Theatre Huntsville’s growth and reach, serving on the boards of Arts Huntsville and the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Her academic roots include a B.A. in Theatre from Mercer University and a Master’s in Arts Administration from the University of Kentucky.
From Atlanta to Chicago to Huntsville—and countless stops on the touring circuit—Leslie’s mission has never changed: to inspire, uplift, and connect through the transformative magic of live theatre.
