Thinking of taking center stage?

Whether you’re a seasoned performer or stepping into the spotlight for the first time, we’re thrilled you’re interested in auditioning!

This page has all the answers to your burning audition questions, from what to expect at tryouts to how casting decisions are made.

So take a deep breath, warm up those vocal cords (or stretch those dramatic eyebrows), and let’s dive in.

  • Theatre Huntsville auditions are open to the public, and there is never a fee to participate.


    All actors participate on a volunteer basis.

  • Yes! Theatre Huntsville does not pre-cast our shows, except in very rare occasions.

    If any role in a show is pre-cast for a specific reason or need, that information will be made available prior to auditions.

  • Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you can move in.

    For a musical audition, wear clothes that you can dance in.

  • Typically, rehearsals take place 3 times weekly, for 6-8 weeks.

    There will be anywhere from 5-11 performances over a 2-3 week period, depending on the show.

    At auditions, actors will fill out an availability questionnaire.

    We request that you be upfront with any potential conflicts as availability may be a factor in final casting decisions.

  • Auditions for plays consist of cold reading a script.

    All you need to bring is yourself! No monologue is required.

    Reading the script and familiarizing yourself with the show and characters is a good idea.

    Typically we will have the selections you will be reading at auditions posted the week before auditions.

  • Musical auditions usually consist of three parts:

    • singing

    • a short dance combination

    • reading from the script

    You should bring sheet music (32 bars to show your range and ability) and clothes/shoes you can dance in. Accompanist provided. No recordings or a cappella. No monologue is required.

    It is a good idea to read the script, listen to the music, watch some videos and familiarize yourself with the show and characters.

Theatre Huntsville Casting Policy

  • Auditionees’ availability and all known conflicts up to the closing day of the show should be provided to the director at auditions.

    Please abide by the conflicts scheduled at time of casting. 

    The director and stage manager must approve additional conflicts and are subject to the approval of the Production Manager at Theatre Huntsville. 

    No person shall be cast in a part larger than a "bit" role if they have any conflict that will prevent attendance at more than two calendar weeks of rehearsals (sequential or non-sequential).

    No absences or tardiness will be allowed during tech week or performance weeks.

  • If a person has been cast in a role or has accepted any other responsibility in a production that conflicts with the TH production, or has broken a previous commitment to another TH production or to another organization, they might be replaced. 

    Each show deserves the full commitment of the cast and crew. 

  • As a volunteer driven organization, it is essential that we all participate in the success of the show.

    Cast members are also responsible for attending:

    • load in

    • strike

    • at least one build day for their production

  • Once auditions and background checks are complete, the director will call those selected for the production to let them know they’ve been cast.

    All other auditionees will be notified of casting by email.

    The cast list will then be posted on the official Theatre Huntsville Facebook Page.

    Please do not post anything regarding casting on social media until Theatre Huntsville officially announces the full cast list.

Theatre Huntsville highly recommends all staff, production and box office/front of house personnel to be fully vaccinated.

You are not required to be vaccinated to audition or to participate.
